Bringing Healing to Our Community

October 3, 2024A Journey of Growth and Grace
If you’ve tried to break a bad habit, you know it’s not easy. But here’s the good news: change is possible! With God’s grace and a little effort, you can overcome the patterns that hold you back. Every step forward, no matter how small, matters.
Let’s consider some simple ways to deal with bad habits together and embrace a journey of positive change.
- Admit It: Awareness is the First Step
The hardest part of breaking a habit is being honest with yourself. Sometimes, it’s easier to make excuses like, “Everyone procrastinates” or “I can stop anytime I want.” However, admitting the habit exists is the first step toward change. You can’t fix what you don’t acknowledge.
- Talk to God About It
God knows our struggles, and He doesn’t judge us for them. Bring your habit to Him in prayer. Ask for strength, wisdom, and patience. Remember, God’s power works best in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When you feel like giving up, lean on His strength.
- Replace, Don’t Just Remove
Habits leave a void, so simply stopping a bad habit isn’t enough. You need to replace it with something positive. For example, if gossip is your struggle, try speaking words of encouragement instead. If you procrastinate, replace wasted time with a short walk or prayer break to clear your mind. Small changes add up.
- Don’t Try to Change Overnight
Let’s be honest: change takes time. Start with small steps that you can handle. If you want to spend less time on social media, try reducing your use by just 15 minutes a day instead of quitting all at once. Celebrate your progress, even if it feels slow; every little success helps you move forward.
- Find a Community to Support You
You don’t have to go through it alone. Accountability makes a difference. Share your struggles with a friend or join a church group that encourages personal growth. Having someone to cheer you on and gently correct you when needed, helps you stay on track.
- Expect Setbacks, But Don’t Give Up
Let’s face it: some days will be harder than others. You might slip up, but failure isn’t final. What matters is how you respond. Use setbacks as opportunities to learn and adjust your approach. Remember, God’s mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Every day is a fresh start.
- Celebrate Your Progress, No Matter How Small
Did you avoid that negative conversation today? Did you spend 10 fewer minutes on your phone? Celebrate it! Small victories are signs that you’re moving in the right direction. Thank God for your progress, and let it motivate you to keep going.
