Marriage

Marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and a woman, blessed by God and recognized by the Catholic Church as a sacrament. It is a lifelong commitment of love, fidelity, and unity, mirroring the unconditional love of Christ for His Church. The Catholic Church holds marriage in high esteem and provides guidance and support to couples as they prepare for this sacred commitment.

The Catholic Church encourages couples to participate in Marriage Preparation Courses as part of their journey toward marriage. These courses provide invaluable guidance, education, and support to couples as they prepare for the sacrament of marriage. Through these courses, couples have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the sacrament, explore important topics such as communication, conflict resolution, and family planning, and grow in their relationship with each other and with God.

Requirements for Marriage Preparation Course

Registration: Couples who wish to get married at CKC Umuezigwe Parish must register for the Marriage Preparation Course by contacting the parish office.

Attendance: Attendance at the Marriage Preparation Course is mandatory for couples intending to marry in the Catholic Church. The course provides essential guidance on the sacrament of marriage, communication, conflict resolution, family planning, and other relevant topics.

Engagement: Couples are encouraged to actively engage in the course sessions, take part in discussions, and complete any assigned readings or activities.

Documentation: Couples are required to provide the following documents: baptismal certificates, proof of completion of pre-marriage counseling, and civil marriage license, as part of the marriage preparation process.

Meeting with Clergy: Couples will meet with a member of the clergy to discuss their readiness for marriage, complete the necessary paperwork, and plan the details of their wedding ceremony.

Requirements for Marriage

In addition to completing the Marriage Preparation Course, couples must meet the following requirements to be married in the Catholic Church:

Baptism: At least one of the individuals must be baptized in the Catholic Church.

Freedom to Marry: Both individuals must be free to marry according to the laws of the Catholic Church, including being of legal age and not currently bound by a previous marriage.

Intentions: Couples must have the intention of entering a lifelong, faithful, and fruitful marriage, open to the gift of children and committed to living out their vows following the teachings of the Catholic Church.
