Catholic Youth Organisation Nigeria
A BRIEF HISTORY OF CYON
CYO Nigeria was founded in 1985 to create a youth organisation for young Catholics in Nigeria. CYON emerged in the context of a concern of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) that the young Catholics and local Catholic youth organisations in Nigeria should celebrate the International Youth Year (IYY) declared by the United Nations in 1985. Several meetings of chaplains responsible for youth affairs and youth leaders from the various dioceses of Nigeria took place to plan a national Catholic youth rally. From this type of rally, CYON finally emerged as a nationwide umbrella for Catholic youth work in Nigeria. In 2010, at the General Assembly in Munich, CYON was adopted as a full member of the international umbrella of Catholic youth organisations "Fimcap". Currently, CYON is building up a cooperation with a Muslim youth organisation to foster peace in the country and to begin an inter-religious dialogue. - Activities - Workshops, seminars, rallies and conventions, camps, skills acquisition, cultural and sports festivals, exchanges, excursions and pilgrimages, youth retreats, and counselling.
In CKC parish Umuezigwe, our catholic youth organisation had its first session and elections in Nov 2016, which brought on board the first executive official with Mr Bora Ogu as the president till 2018 by the middle of 2018; another interim executive came to administration with Mr Hyginus Ibekwe as the president. Furthermore, in 2022, with a change in the diocese's administrative structure, another executive headed by Ezinwa James Anuzuo came in. And presently, another interim executive with Master Miracle Onyemaobi as the president.
